About:

Frank G.Gress, MD is a Professor of Medicine and Chief, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Prior to his arrival at SUNY Downstate in April, 2007, Dr. Gress was an Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University and a member of the faculty in the Division of Gastroenterology. In addition, he served as the Clinical Chief for the Gastroenterology Section at the Durham VA Medical Center and was Director of the Endoscopic Research Program within the Division of Gastroenterology at Duke University. He was also a clinical faculty member of the Pancreaticobiliary Service at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.

Dr. Gress completed his medical school training at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, NY and his residency in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, NY. He completed his gastroenterology fellowship training at the Brooklyn Hospital Center and Methodist Hospital affiliated with the State University of New York, Health Sciences Center, Brooklyn, NY. After completing his gastroenterology fellowship, Dr. Gress was awarded the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Advanced Endoscopy Scholarship, which was established to support training in Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy. Dr. Gress completed an advanced therapeutic endoscopy fellowship at the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN where he trained in the emerging field of Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) and also lasers, PDT, endoluminal stents and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

After completion of his advanced endoscopy training, Dr. Gress remained on the faculty at Indiana University as an Assistant Professor of Medicine on the Tenure track and Director of the Endoscopic Ultrasound Unit until December 31, 1996. In 1996, Dr. Gress accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of Endoscopy at Winthrop University Hospital – a major teaching affiliate for the State University of New York (SUNY), School of Medicine and Health Sciences Center, Stony Brook, NY. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine on the tenure track at the School of Medicine, State University of New York, Stony Brook, NY and in 2000 was made Chief of Endoscopy Services at Winthrop University Hospital, a position he maintained until leaving for Duke University in 2003.

Dr. Gress has published over 60 articles on original research in highly respected peer review journals and contributed over 25 chapters to numerous textbooks on such subjects as clinical gastroenterology, pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, advanced endoscopy, training simulators for endoscopy and the clinical applications of EUS to name a few. He also lectures regularly at regional and national meetings on these subjects. He also co-authored a textbook “Endoscopic Ultrasonography” in 2002 and is in the process of compiling a second edition of this text.

Dr. Gress is also actively involved in endoscopic research.
His research interests include:

» Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
» High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)
» Pancreatic disease including acute and chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer
» Endoscopy training simulators
» New endoscopic technology
» Developmental endoscopy
» Barrett’s Esophagus
» Ablation Therapy for Barrett’s and early esophageal cancer including Barrx, and PDT
» Cryotherapy, and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR).

Dr Gress is an active member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and has been a member of several important committees within the society including the Training Committee, Publications Committee and the Postgraduate Education Committee.

He also served as Chair of the ASGE Training Committee from 2000-2003. He is equally involved with the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), being an active member since 1991. He served as Course Director, for the Training Directors’ Workshop, in 2000 and again in 2003;

He served as Chair for the revision of the endoscopy section of the AGA GI Fellowship Core Curriculum Project (2002). He also has been active in the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), serving on the Public Policy Committee in 1994. He was nominated and accepted into the Bockus Society of Gastroenterology in 1997. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and the American College of Physicians (ACP) and recently completed a 4 year term (2000-2005) as the ACP Governor for the New York Downstate region.

Dr. Gress is active regionally as a member of the New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (NYSGE) and has been a member of this society since 1996. He has served as Chair of Membership Committee, Secretary and Treasurer of the society.

Dr. Gress is also therapeutic endoscopist and performs the following advanced procedures:

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), including:

» Endoscopic drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts/ fluid collection
» Endoscopic necrosectomy
» Endoscopic mucosal resection of early esophageal, gastric, rectal cancers
» Placement of self-expandable metal stents for palliation of esophageal, Gastro-duodenal cancer & colorectal cancer

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), including:

» Sphincter of Oddi manometry
» Pancreatic & biliary sphincterotomy
» Tissue sampling for the diagnosis of benign & malignant strictures
» Balloon dilation & stenting of post liver transplantation biliary strictures
» Placement of pancreatic & biliary plastic & self-expandable metal stents
» Stone extraction
» Mechanical & electrohydraulic lithotripsy
» Cholangioscopy & pancreatoscopy

Thermal ablation of Barrett’s Esophagus including:

» Barrx Therapy
» PDT
