Welcome to the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology !

Prior to accepting the position of Chief, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, I was on the faculty at Duke University Medical Center. For me, this is an exciting opportunity to rebuild a once premier academic university based GI Program in Brooklyn. I wanted to take the opportunity to update you on the recent changes to the GI Division over the past 2 years and also let you know about the services we can provide for our patients.

A Digestive Disease Center has been established that provides expertise in all aspects of gastrointestinal disease management in a patient friendly multidisciplinary environment. Centers of Excellence have been established in Esophageal Diseases and Motility Disorders, Advanced Imaging, Pancreaticobiliary Diseases, Gastrointestinal Oncology and Liver Diseases. We now have 9 faculty members with extensive academic credentials having trained and practiced at such renowned institutions as Brigham and Women’s, Georgetown, Harvard, NYU, Yale, and Mayo Clinic to name a few. As a group we provide expertise in all aspects of GI disease and advanced endoscopy.

A state of the art outpatient endoscopy center was recently established in order to provide improved and efficient endoscopy services for such cutting edge procedures like high resolution motility studies, 24 hour pH studies, EUS, ERCP, Endoscopic Ablation techniques (i.e Barrx RFA) for treating high grade dysplasia w/Barrett’s esophagus, early esophageal and gastric cancers and radiation proctitis. This center is located on campus but is outside of University Hospital and only two blocks from the medical center. This new center boasts a full clinical office area and a fully equipped EUS unit providing all diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, Barrx and Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), Capsule Endoscopy, Single Balloon Enteroscopy, Esophageal and Ano-rectal Manometry. In addition, our Pancreaticobiliary Service offers ERCP procedures including all therapeutic techniques and Sphincter of Oddi Manometry

The Endoscopy Center can be reached by the LIRR Flatbush Avenue train station taking the #2 or #5 subway to the Winthrop Avenue Station. It is located one block from the subway exit and is also conveniently located near the Grand Central Parkway via the Jackie Robinson Parkway or the Belt Parkway. Parking is available for all patients and is conveniently located at the center.

In addition, we also have an outstanding faculty with diverse clinical and research experience. Our research is regularly presented at DDW and ACG and most faculty publish regularly in the GI literature. We welcome participation in research from our past graduates and would be happy to discuss potential projects and collaboration if you are interested.

Please visit our site to learn more about the new goings on at Downstate GI. If you are a graduate of Downstate, please feel free to subscribe to the “alumni page” and send us your updated contact information as well so we can include you on any alumni related mailings.

My contact information for arranging consultations and/or scheduling EUS, PDT, Barrx, Motility, ERCP, Biliary/SOD manometry, GERD ablation procedures and other endoscopy services is (718) 282-7234.

If you need to speak with me for any reason or have any concerns, questions or suggestions, as always please don’t hesitate to call me at (718) 270-1113 or email me at :  frank.gress@downstate.edu
